MYP eAssessment can look deceptively simple from the outside. Students sit an examination on a computer, complete digital coursework, and receive externally validated results.

For teachers and coordinators, however, successful preparation involves much more than moving a paper test onto a screen.

Students need to understand MYP criteria, respond accurately to command terms, apply knowledge in unfamiliar contexts, work confidently with digital tools, manage two hours of assessment time, and move between different types of stimulus without losing focus.

Schools also need to manage registration, devices, access arrangements, mock examinations, ePortfolios, teacher standardisation, and exam session deadlines.

This MYP eAssessment guide brings those pieces together so teachers and coordinators can see what needs to happen before exam day and, more importantly, what students should actually be practising.

What Is MYP eAssessment?

MYP eAssessment is the International Baccalaureate's optional external assessment pathway for students completing the final year of the Middle Years Programme.

It allows student achievement to be evaluated against common international standards rather than relying only on assessments created and marked within an individual school.

The system uses two main forms of assessment.

First, students complete on screen examinations in subjects where knowledge, analysis, problem solving, communication, and application can be assessed digitally.

Second, students complete ePortfolio based assessment in subjects where performance, process, creation, or practical work needs to be captured over time.

For students pursuing the full IB MYP certificate, these different assessment components come together to provide an externally validated record of MYP achievement.

The maximum certificate score is 56, based on eight required eAssessment components. Students must meet the IB's individual component and total score requirements to earn the certificate.

What matters for teachers is that MYP eAssessment is not designed as a traditional recall examination.

The IB describes the emphasis clearly:

"Unlike other examination systems, the IB MYP on-screen examinations focus 75% of the assessment explicitly on inquiry, communication and critical thinking skills."

That should shape the entire preparation strategy.

Teaching students more content is not enough. They need repeated opportunities to use what they know.

Which MYP eAssessment Subjects Are On Screen?

The current MYP on screen examination structure includes several subject groups and disciplines.

Language and Literature

Language and Literature is assessed through an on screen examination.

Depending on the language offered by the IB for the examination session, students may analyse written, visual, multimedia, and other forms of text before producing structured responses.

Individuals and Societies

Available on screen disciplines include Geography, History, and Integrated Humanities.

These examinations can ask students to interpret sources, recognise perspectives, evaluate evidence, construct arguments, work with data, and apply concepts to unfamiliar situations.

Mathematics

Both Mathematics and Extended Mathematics are available as on screen examinations.

Students may need to work across numerical, graphical, symbolic, and visual representations while using digital mathematical tools.

Sciences

Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Integrated Sciences are available on screen.

Students should expect more than straightforward factual questions. Scientific investigation, data interpretation, hypothesis development, evaluation, and application to real situations are central to effective preparation.

Interdisciplinary Learning

Interdisciplinary Learning is also assessed on screen.

This component is particularly important because students are expected to draw knowledge from different disciplines together rather than treating subjects as isolated areas.

They may need to establish disciplinary understanding, create meaningful connections, synthesise ideas, and reflect on what different disciplines contribute to an issue.

Language Acquisition

Language Acquisition needs slightly more explanation because it combines assessment formats.

The assessment includes an on screen examination alongside an internally assessed individual speaking assessment.

In the 2026 examination schedules, the on screen Language Acquisition examination lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes rather than two hours.

Which Subjects Use ePortfolios?

Arts, Design, and Physical and Health Education use ePortfolio assessment.

These components are assessed by teachers, with samples reviewed by IB examiners for external moderation.

Language Acquisition also has an internally assessed component as part of its combined assessment model.

The Personal Project forms another important part of the overall MYP assessment structure. Unlike the optional external eAssessment pathway in other subjects, the Personal Project is a required element of completing the MYP and is externally validated by the IB.

For coordinators, this distinction matters because preparation cannot be organised around one single "exam season." Some components require sustained planning and submission workflows long before students enter an examination room.

What Does an MYP On Screen Examination Look Like?

Most MYP on screen examinations last two hours.

The format is not simply a PDF examination displayed on a laptop.

The digital environment can include:

  1. Drag and drop interactions
  2. Copy and paste functions
  3. Video and animation
  4. Interactive simulations
  5. Graph plotting
  6. Drawing tools
  7. Data tables
  8. Mathematical response tools
  9. An integrated graphing calculator

Students may therefore need to read a source, watch a stimulus, manipulate information, interpret a graph, construct a response, and then move into extended writing during the same examination.

This is why digital familiarity should be treated as part of examination technique.

A student who understands the academic content but wastes time navigating tools, scrolling between sources, editing responses, or entering mathematical notation is still losing valuable assessment time.

What Teachers Can Learn From MYP Task Design

The IB's familiarisation materials show an important principle that remains useful for teachers: MYP eAssessment is organised around meaningful tasks rather than endless sequences of isolated questions.

For example, familiarisation materials for Individuals and Societies have used combinations of source engagement, investigation, and extended response.

Science materials have used tasks centred on knowing and understanding, investigation, and applying science.

Mathematics materials demonstrate the use of graphing, drawing, measuring, tables, and mathematical response tools.

Interdisciplinary assessment asks students to move from disciplinary grounding into synthesis and reflection.

Teachers should use the latest subject guides and session materials for current assessment requirements, but the broader lesson is consistent.

Students need to practise doing something with knowledge.

They must interpret, analyse, justify, evaluate, investigate, create, synthesise, and communicate.

MYP eAssessment Schedule for 2026 and 2027

The IB runs MYP examination sessions in May and November.

For 2026, the official May examination period ran from 4 May to 15 May.

The November 2026 examination period runs from 2 November to 13 November.

Individual subjects are scheduled across those windows, with morning and afternoon sessions determined by the official IB timetable.

What About the 2027 MYP eAssessment Schedule?

As of August 2026, the public IB MYP examination schedule page lists the May 2026 and November 2026 schedules. A complete public day by day timetable for the 2027 MYP examination sessions has not yet been posted there.

Schools planning for 2027 should therefore avoid building internal schedules around unofficial projected dates.

The standing IB registration timeline is still useful for long range planning.

For a May session, candidate registration is due by 20 October.

For a November session, candidate registration is due by 20 April.

The IB also currently states that inclusive access arrangements should normally be submitted six months before the intended examination session. Adaptations relating to vision or hearing impairment need substantially earlier planning, with the IB stating a one year lead time.

Coordinators should confirm all session specific dates through IBIS and the Programme Resource Centre before finalising their school calendar.

How to Prepare an MYP Cohort Properly

The strongest preparation programmes make eAssessment familiar long before the final month.

1. Map Every Student's Assessment Route

Start by confirming which subjects each student is registered for and whether each component is an on screen examination, ePortfolio, speaking assessment, or Personal Project requirement.

Do not assume every student in the cohort has the same assessment combination.

2. Build Screen Practice Into Normal Teaching

Students should not meet the digital assessment format for the first time during a mock examination.

Use regular classroom assessments that require typed responses, digital source interpretation, graphs, data, and longer screen based reading.

The aim is to make the interface feel ordinary.

3. Teach Command Terms Explicitly

A student can know the correct content and still lose marks by answering the wrong intellectual task.

"Explain," "analyse," "evaluate," "compare," and "justify" require different forms of thinking.

Teachers should make command term interpretation part of normal classroom discussion rather than leaving it for revision week.

4. Use Unfamiliar Contexts

Students should regularly encounter material they have not seen before.

Give them new data sets, unseen texts, unfamiliar case studies, new scientific scenarios, and unexpected combinations of concepts.

This trains transfer rather than memorisation.

5. Practise Timing

Two hours can disappear quickly when an assessment combines short responses, sources, data, interactive tasks, and extended writing.

Students need timed sections before they need full mocks.

Once they understand their own pace, move towards complete examination length practice.

6. Review Through MYP Criteria

After practice, do not stop at a numerical score.

Ask where performance weakened against the relevant criteria.

Was the problem knowledge?

Organisation?

Analysis?

Evaluation?

Communication?

Investigation?

Students improve faster when feedback identifies the skill causing the lost marks.

7. Test the Real Examination Conditions

Before the final session, run at least one realistic mock using the devices, room arrangements, timing expectations, and accessibility provisions that students are likely to encounter.

Technical familiarity reduces unnecessary cognitive load on examination day.

For a structured final month, use the MYP eAssessment 30 Day Study Plan to turn these principles into a week by week preparation schedule.

The MYP Past Paper Problem

One challenge for MYP teachers is access to authentic practice material.

Official MYP past examinations, specimen examinations, marking schemes, subject reports, and marked examples are provided to authorised schools through the IB's protected Programme Resource Centre.

They are not maintained as an unrestricted public past paper archive for students.

That means teachers should be careful about building a preparation programme around random files found online.

For a full explanation of what is officially available and how to practise responsibly, read our MYP Past Papers and eAssessment Practice guide.

The better approach is to use official material for calibration, then give students enough fresh practice that they learn the assessment skills rather than memorising individual papers.

Build More MYP eAssessment Practice With Koncepts

This is where a practice paper builder becomes particularly useful.

Teachers need more than a bank of old questions. They need fresh opportunities to practise MYP criteria, appropriate command terms, unfamiliar contexts, structured responses, data interpretation, and extended tasks.

With the Koncepts eAssessment practice paper builder, teachers can create MYP aligned practice assessments for their own cohort, review and edit the questions, generate marking support, and build additional practice without waiting for another official past paper to become available.

That makes practice easier to distribute across the year.

Instead of completing three past papers repeatedly, students can work through a larger variety of questions while teachers target specific criteria or skills that need improvement.

The goal is not to predict the examination.

It is to make the thinking required by the examination familiar.

Frequently Asked Questions About MYP eAssessment

Are MYP eAssessments Mandatory?

External MYP eAssessment is optional for schools and candidates. The Personal Project remains a required component of the MYP.

Are All MYP On Screen Examinations Two Hours?

Most current on screen examinations are two hours. Language Acquisition is listed as 1 hour and 45 minutes in the 2026 examination schedules.

Are ePortfolios Marked Externally?

Teachers mark ePortfolio coursework internally. The IB then reviews samples to moderate results against international standards.

What Digital Tools Can Students Use?

Depending on the task, the IB examination environment can provide functions for graphing, drawing, tables, multimedia, simulations, and an on screen graphing calculator.

Students should become comfortable using digital response tools before the examination session.

When Will the 2027 MYP eAssessment Dates Be Available?

Schools should use the official IB MYP examination schedule, IBIS, and the Programme Resource Centre for confirmed session dates. At the time of writing in August 2026, the public IB schedule page still lists the 2026 May and November timetables rather than a complete 2027 day by day schedule.

Final Thoughts

Good MYP eAssessment preparation should not feel like months of examination drilling.

It should feel like good MYP teaching becoming progressively more deliberate.

Students need conceptual understanding, but they also need practice applying it. They need subject knowledge, but they also need command term discipline. They need confidence with criteria, but they also need confidence with the screen.

When teachers build those habits throughout the year, the final examination becomes less of a new event and more of a familiar opportunity to demonstrate what students already know how to do.

Official resources provide the standard. Regular classroom assessment builds the skills. Realistic practice builds confidence.

And when official past papers are limited to protected IB resources, the Koncepts eAssessment practice paper builder gives teachers a practical way to keep creating fresh, MYP aligned practice for the students who need it.
