The Systems Transformation course remains a pilot rather than a standard requirement for all schools. Digital examinations are also being introduced in phases, not imposed universally in a single examination session.

The most important task for students is therefore not to understand every reform in detail. It is to identify which version of each course they are studying and which examination session will assess them.

Why the IB Diploma Is Changing

Creating refers to developing artworks through experimentation, decision making, and material practice.

Connecting involves examining relationships among artists, artworks, audiences, cultures, ideas, and contexts.

Communicating concerns the ways students present artistic intentions, processes, and outcomes.

This structure reflects an important shift in emphasis. Students are not simply assembling separate components for submission. They are expected to show how research, experimentation, reflection, and artistic choices influence one another.

The revised assessment model retains three major assessment tasks, but the tasks have been redesigned. The number of required resolved artworks and screens has been reduced.

Students should not interpret this as permission to do less work.

The purpose is to make the evidence more selective and meaningful. A smaller submission can demand stronger judgement because students must choose the clearest evidence of their development.

The maximum length remains 4,000 words. It continues to be an independently researched academic essay completed with guidance from a supervisor.

The major structural change is the introduction of two clearly defined research pathways.

A student may complete a subject focused Extended Essay using the methods and perspective of one Diploma Programme subject.

Alternatively, a student may complete an interdisciplinary Extended Essay by integrating the perspectives of two Diploma Programme subjects.

The interdisciplinary option is broader than the previous World Studies structure. It allows students to investigate complex questions that cannot be examined effectively through one subject alone.

However, interdisciplinary does not mean loosely combining two topics.

A strong interdisciplinary essay must show that both subjects make a necessary contribution to answering the research question. The methods, concepts, or evidence from each subject should interact meaningfully.

Students should choose the pathway only after examining the nature of their question.

A question about the literary construction of memory in a novel may be best suited to a subject focused Language A essay.

A question about how economic policy and environmental systems interact in managing urban water could justify an interdisciplinary approach using Economics and Environmental Systems and Societies.

The updated Extended Essay also places stronger emphasis on the student’s development through reflection. Reflection should show changes in thinking, decisions made during research, obstacles encountered, and skills gained.

It should not become a diary of meetings with the supervisor.

Students beginning the Extended Essay should confirm that their school is using the guide for first assessment in May 2027. Older examples remain useful for studying academic writing, but their criteria and subject rules may differ.

Mathematics Changes Begin Later Than Many Students Think

Mathematics is often included in discussions about the 2027 IB changes, but the timeline is different from Psychology, Computer Science, Visual Arts, and the Extended Essay.

The revised Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation courses begin teaching in August 2027.

Their first assessment is scheduled for May 2029.

This means a student sitting Mathematics examinations in May 2027 or May 2028 will not automatically move to the newly revised course.

The updated Mathematics courses are described as refinements rather than complete replacements.

Analysis and Approaches will continue to emphasise mathematical reasoning, algebraic fluency, functions, calculus, problem solving, and the construction of mathematical arguments.

Applications and Interpretation will continue to emphasise modelling, statistical thinking, technology, practical contexts, functions, and calculus.

Students should expect clearer attention to mathematical inquiry and the habits of a successful mathematics learner.

For current students, the practical message is reassuring. Do not abandon your current syllabus because you have seen information about Mathematics changes beginning in 2027.

Your teacher and coordinator should confirm the guide attached to your examination session. Study the syllabus you are registered for, not the newest syllabus mentioned online.

Systems Transformation Is Not Replacing the Diploma

The Systems Transformation course is one of the most ambitious developments being explored by the IB.

It is a transdisciplinary course that combines systems thinking, design thinking, transformative action, and community engagement. In its pilot form, it can replace two Standard Level subjects.

The course is designed for students to investigate complex systems, understand how different parts influence one another, and develop practical responses to significant challenges.

However, current students must understand its status.

Systems Transformation is still being developed through a limited pilot. It is not a compulsory subject for all Diploma Programme students. It is not replacing the standard six subject structure across all IB schools in 2027.

The pilot is expected to expand to more schools before any planned wider global offering.

Unless a school has formally joined the pilot and has directly offered the course to its students, Systems Transformation will not change that student’s Diploma Programme.

Students should therefore view it as an important sign of the IB’s future direction rather than an immediate universal requirement.

Digital Exams Will Arrive Gradually

The IB is preparing to deliver more Diploma Programme and Career related Programme examinations on screen.

The transition begins with a limited number of subjects and schools. It is a multiyear process rather than a single global switch.

During the transition, paper examinations will continue to be available while schools prepare for digital delivery.

Whether a student takes a digital examination will depend on the subject, examination session, school readiness, and the IB’s implementation schedule.

Digital examinations do not simply mean typing the same answers that would have been written on paper.

On screen assessment can include structured navigation, digital response spaces, data, images, source materials, and tools designed for particular subjects.

Students selected for digital examinations should practise in the exact environment provided or approved by their school. General typing practice is useful, but it does not replace familiarity with the examination interface.

Students should learn how to navigate between questions, manage time on screen, enter symbols where required, review answers, and work with digital source material.

They should also maintain handwritten examination skills until their school confirms that a particular assessment will be digital.

Preparing only for one format before receiving official school guidance can create unnecessary risk.

What Current Students Should Do Now

The first step is to write down your final examination session.

Next, ask your coordinator or subject teacher which guide applies to every subject and core component.

Check that your study resources match that guide. Look at the first assessment year printed on the course material rather than trusting the upload date or cover design.

For Psychology and Computer Science, build understanding through inquiry, application, and evaluation instead of relying only on memorised content.

For Visual Arts, document the development of your work continuously and select evidence carefully.

For the Extended Essay, decide whether your question genuinely requires one subject or two. Do not choose the interdisciplinary pathway simply because it sounds more impressive.

For Mathematics, follow your registered syllabus and ignore changes intended for later cohorts unless your teacher explains their relevance.

For digital examinations, practise only after your school confirms the format and provides appropriate tools.

Finally, do not build your preparation around rumours from students in other schools. Schools may offer different subjects, enter different pilot programmes, and adopt digital assessments at different stages.
