
“But how do you know what they have learned if there are no exams?”
Almost every PYP teacher eventually hears some version of this question.
It is a reasonable one. Many adults experienced school systems where learning became visible through tests, percentages, marks and rankings. Remove those familiar signals and assessment can appear less rigorous.
The Primary Years Programme takes a different approach.
The International Baccalaureate states:
“The PYP does not offer formal assessment.”
It then explains that the primary purpose of PYP assessment is to provide feedback on the learning process.
That does not mean teachers stop assessing students.
It means assessment is not reserved for one high-stakes event at the end of learning.
Instead, teachers gather evidence while learning is happening, respond to what that evidence reveals and give students repeated opportunities to reflect, revise and demonstrate deeper understanding.
A conversation can provide assessment evidence.
So can a drawing, model, explanation, concept map, journal entry, investigation, presentation, reflection or revised idea.
The important question is not:
Where is the exam?
It is:
What evidence shows what this learner understands now, and what should happen next?
What “No Formal Assessment” Actually Means
There is an important distinction between no formal IB assessment and no assessment at all.
The IB does not administer formal external PYP examinations or award PYP subject grades in the same way that formal assessment operates in programmes such as the MYP or DP.
Individual schools may still work within national requirements, use local assessments, administer tests or report achievement in ways required by their context.
So “the PYP does not offer formal assessment” should not be interpreted as:
- PYP students can never take a quiz
- teachers cannot use tests
- schools cannot report progress
- assessment must always be informal
- every activity must be inquiry based
The more important distinction is what teachers do with the evidence.
Effective PYP assessment should help answer questions such as:
- What does this learner understand now?
- Which misconception is still visible?
- What can the learner apply independently?
- What evidence supports that judgement?
- What feedback would move the learning forward?
- What should the teacher adjust next?
- What does the learner recognise about their own progress?
This is why assessment in a strong PYP classroom can feel continuous without becoming constant testing.
IB research examining assessment cultures across PYP schools has described assessment as holistic and ongoing, using a wide variety of evidence and strategies.
Formative Assessment: Evidence While Learning Is Still Developing
Formative assessment happens while there is still time to change what happens next.
Imagine a class investigating how human choices affect water systems.
During a discussion, several students explain that once dirty water enters a drain, it simply “disappears.”
The teacher now has assessment evidence.
No percentage is required.
The misconception itself tells the teacher something important about the learners’ current understanding.
The next learning experience might involve tracing the school drainage system, examining a treatment diagram, interviewing facilities staff or modelling what happens after water leaves the building.
The assessment has changed the teaching.
That is what makes it formative.
IB-supported research into formative assessment in PYP classrooms has examined strategies such as:
- learning intentions
- success criteria
- teacher questioning
- feedback
- student self-assessment
- peer assessment
The central idea is that learning, teaching and assessing should work together rather than operate as three disconnected stages.
For teachers, this creates a useful planning shift.
Instead of asking only:
“How will I assess this unit at the end?”
also ask:
“What evidence should I notice while students are still building their understanding?”
That question belongs inside unit planning from the beginning.

Culminating Assessment: Showing What Understanding Has Become
Many PYP units still include a substantial task towards the end of the inquiry.
It might be:
- a presentation
- investigation
- performance
- model
- explanation
- design
- debate
- application task
- portfolio selection
Teachers may informally describe this as a summative or culminating assessment.
The important point is that the IB does not prescribe one universal end-of-unit assessment format for every PYP inquiry.
What matters is whether the evidence reveals the understanding the unit was designed to develop.
Consider a unit exploring the idea that systems distribute resources differently.
A weak culminating task might ask students to define five vocabulary words about water access.
A stronger task might ask students to examine a local water system, identify where access or waste occurs and propose a justified improvement.
Both tasks could produce something that can be marked.
Only the second provides substantial evidence of whether students can use the central conceptual understanding.
Assessment in a concept-driven programme should reveal more than recall.
The current PYP curriculum framework emphasises transdisciplinary, inquiry-based learning and the development of conceptual understanding across and beyond traditional subject boundaries.
A useful culminating task should therefore ask:
What can learners now explain, apply, connect, justify or create that they could not do at the beginning of the inquiry?
Self-Assessment: Helping Learners Recognise Their Own Learning
Assessment does not belong only to the teacher.
Student self-assessment and reflection are important parts of PYP learning.
This does not mean asking students to give themselves a grade.
It means helping learners become better at recognising:
- what they understand
- where their thinking changed
- which evidence supports their conclusion
- what strategy helped
- where they are still uncertain
- what they should do next
A student might initially write:
“I did well in this unit.”
That is technically reflection, but it reveals very little.
A stronger self-assessment might say:
“My first explanation described what happened. After comparing the two systems, I could explain why their outcomes were different.”
Now the learner has identified a change in understanding and connected that change to evidence.
Another learner might write:
“During the first investigation I waited for my group to decide what to do. In the second investigation, I started suggesting questions myself.”
That gives the teacher evidence about learner agency as well as content learning.
The difference is important.
Weak reflection reports a feeling.
Strong reflection examines learning.

A Better Reflection Prompt
Instead of:
“What did you learn?”
try:
“What changed in your thinking, and what evidence caused that change?”
That question makes reflection much harder to answer with a generic sentence.
Peer Assessment: Learning to Recognise Quality
Peer assessment is sometimes misunderstood as asking children to grade one another.
It does not need to work that way.
At its best, peer assessment helps learners recognise quality and communicate useful feedback.
A student might compare a partner’s explanation against jointly developed success criteria and say:
“You included evidence from the investigation, but I cannot tell how the evidence supports your conclusion yet.”
The student receiving the feedback now has something specific to improve.
The student giving the feedback is also learning.
They are analysing evidence, interpreting success criteria and judging the quality of an explanation.
However, peer assessment does not automatically become useful simply because students work in pairs.
IB research into PYP assessment practices found that teacher feedback and student self-assessment were common, while views about peer assessment were more mixed.
Students need:
- Clear success criteria
- Examples of useful feedback
- Teacher modelling
- Appropriate language
- Practice separating evaluation of the work from judgement of the person
Peer assessment is a skill to develop, not simply a routine to assign.
Four Useful Assessment Lenses
Teachers and families can think about PYP assessment through four practical lenses:
- Formative evidence while understanding is developing
- Culminating evidence showing what learners can now understand or apply
- Self-assessment and reflection helping learners recognise their own development
- Peer feedback helping learners recognise and improve quality
These are useful ways to explain practice.
They are not four official IB assessment categories that must appear separately in every PYP unit.
In real classrooms, they overlap.
A student explaining an idea to a partner might simultaneously:
- provide formative evidence to the teacher
- notice a weakness in their own reasoning
- receive peer feedback
- revise their explanation
A culminating task may reveal a misconception that leads to another learning experience.
Assessment is therefore better understood as a flow:
Evidence → Interpretation → Feedback → Action → New Evidence
The Learner Profile Can Also Generate Evidence
PYP assessment is not limited to subject knowledge.
Learners also develop skills, agency and learner profile attributes.
But observing these areas should not mean converting a child’s personality into a score.
A teacher might document evidence such as:
- a learner revising an idea after receiving new evidence
- a student taking responsibility during group work
- a child listening carefully to a conflicting perspective
- a learner recognising where a strategy failed
- a student explaining why they changed their position
The important difference is between describing observable evidence and labelling the child.
Instead of:
“Maya is a 7/10 communicator.”
a teacher might record:
“Maya summarised both group positions before explaining why she disagreed.”
The second statement gives useful evidence.

The PYP Exhibition Makes Assessment Visible
The PYP Exhibition is one of the clearest examples of how complex learning can become visible without a traditional examination.
The IB describes the Exhibition as:
“an authentic process for students to explore, document and share their understanding”
of an issue or opportunity that has personal significance.
The Exhibition takes place in the final year of the PYP.
That is often Grade 5 in particular school structures, but Grade 5 itself is not a universal IB requirement.
During the Exhibition, students engage in an extended process that may involve:
- developing questions
- conducting research
- collaborating
- evaluating information
- documenting thinking
- reflecting
- taking action
- presenting learning
IB research across schools in several countries found that the Exhibition commonly involved inquiry, research, collaboration, action and presentation.
Participants also associated the Exhibition with development in areas such as critical thinking, international-mindedness and learner profile attributes.
The polished final presentation is therefore only one piece of evidence.
Teachers can also notice:
- how the learner framed questions
- how they selected and evaluated sources
- how they responded to feedback
- how their thinking changed
- how they collaborated
- how they handled difficulty
- how they explained the significance of what they discovered
The process becomes part of the evidence.
What Should PYP Teachers Actually Collect?
The goal is not to document everything a child does.
More evidence does not automatically mean better assessment.
Teachers need evidence that supports a meaningful decision.
Across a PYP inquiry, useful evidence might include:
- student explanations
- classroom conversations
- observations
- anecdotal notes
- concept maps
- diagrams
- journals
- learning stories
- drafts
- revisions
- models
- demonstrations
- student reflections
- peer feedback
- photographs with learner commentary
- presentations
- performances
- applied tasks
- portfolios
- Exhibition documentation
The evidence should connect to the intended learning.
That might include:
- the central idea
- lines of inquiry
- conceptual understanding
- subject knowledge
- Approaches to Learning
- learner profile development
- student agency
- action
A portfolio containing twenty attractive pieces of work is not necessarily more useful than five deliberately selected pieces showing how a learner’s thinking changed.
The purpose of documentation is not accumulation.
It is interpretation.
Feedback Is What Turns Assessment Into Learning
Assessment becomes useful when somebody acts on the evidence.
That person may be the teacher:
“Several learners understand the sequence but cannot explain the relationship. I need to model that distinction tomorrow.”
It may be the student:
“My diagram is accurate, but I cannot yet explain why the system works this way.”
It may even be the class:
“Our success criteria mention accurate information but not evidence. The strongest examples all use evidence, so we should revise the criteria.”
This is why feedback matters.
Useful feedback does not simply record what happened.
It influences what happens next.
The most useful feedback is usually:
- specific
- connected to evidence
- understandable to the learner
- focused on something the learner can act on
- delivered while revision is still possible
A comment that arrives after the learner has mentally finished with the task has limited power.
Feedback becomes more valuable when there is still an opportunity to use it.
No Formal Exams Does Not Mean No Rigour
Rigour should not be measured by how stressful an assessment feels.
A written examination can be rigorous.
So can an inquiry.
A useful question is:
What intellectual work is the learner being asked to do?
Can the student:
- explain a concept rather than repeat a definition?
- use an idea in a new situation?
- select relevant evidence?
- compare perspectives?
- justify a decision?
- revise an explanation after encountering contradictory evidence?
- identify a misconception?
- reflect accurately on what they understand?
- decide what they still need to investigate?
Those are demanding forms of thinking.
A PYP classroom can therefore operate without formal IB examinations while still expecting deep knowledge, conceptual understanding, careful reasoning and strong evidence.
The assessment format is different.
The expectation to understand is not.

A Simple PYP Assessment Check
Before finalising an assessment plan, ask five questions.
1. What understanding are we actually trying to see?
Start with the central idea, conceptual understanding or intended outcome.
2. What would count as convincing evidence?
Decide what learners would need to explain, create, apply, demonstrate or justify.
3. When will we collect that evidence?
Do not wait until the final task.
Look for evidence before, during and after the inquiry.
4. What will happen because of the evidence?
If assessment does not influence teaching, feedback, revision or student decision-making, ask what purpose it is serving.
5. Can learners see their own progress?
Make some of the evidence visible to students so assessment is something they participate in, not something that only happens to them.
The Question Parents Should Ask Instead
“But how do you know what they have learned if there are no exams?”
PYP teachers do not need to wait until the end of a unit to begin answering that question.
They listen to explanations.
They examine work.
They observe how learners apply ideas.
They ask questions.
They compare earlier thinking with later thinking.
They notice misconceptions.
They examine drafts and revisions.
They invite learners to reflect.
They use feedback to decide what should happen next.
And in the final year, the PYP Exhibition gives students an extended opportunity to bring inquiry, reflection, agency, research and action together.
The better question is therefore not:
“Where is the exam?”
It is:
“What evidence shows how this learner’s understanding has changed?”
That question gets much closer to what PYP assessment is designed to reveal.
